GPRS Provides Peace of Mind for Crews on Wind Farms

GPRS was recently contacted by a large energy corporation to locate underground utilities at one of their new wind projects in Oklahoma. The work consisted of using radio detection and ground penetrating radar to locate and mark out utilities that were along the collection lines, transmission lines, and turbine sites on the wind farm. Andy Dermer – GPRS Oklahoma - performed the work by scanning the designated areas and marking the locations of utilities directly on the ground with marking paint, pin flags, and wooden stakes. These findings were also recorded to be used in a Google Earth file for future reference. With renewable energy on the rise, Ground Penetrating Radar can be an invaluable tool to help keep the site safe. Due to the instantaneous results GPRS can provide, the information is immediately available to prevent accidents or injury on the job site.

Prior to the construction of a new building, GPRS OKC used radar scanning to mark out the existing utilities within the area. GPRS marked electric, water, sewer and irrigation lines running within the area so they may be avoiding during the excavation process.

As you can see in the image to the right, the findings were marked directly onto the surface using marking paint and pin flags. The markings were communicated with the customer and understand before GPRS left the site. GPRS saved the general contractor significant costs related to damages and possible injuries.

Prior to the installation of new electrical lines, electrical contractor contacted Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, Inc. to scan the areas prior to core-drilling. Jay Tate-GPRS Tulsa, Oklahoma mobilized to the site in downtown Tulsa, Oklahoma to perform a method of concrete x-ray within the suggested areas. Due to the portability of the GPR antenna, the radar imaging was performed quickly and accurately. Since the results were marked directly onto the surface, the customer was able to avoid any PT Cables, damage to the structure and injuries on-site.

Unlike x-ray/gamma ray, Ground Penetrating Radar is time efficient, non-hazardous and able to show real time results. The energy emitted is equivalent to 1% of a cell phone, therefore, the production of the construction site can continue without any radiation hazards.
